DEFINITIONS

SINGLE NUCLEOTIDE POLYMORPHISMS: Are genetic variations in a DNA sequence that occurs when a single nucleotide in a genome is altered; SNPs are usually considered to be point mutations that have been evolutionarily successful enough to recur in a significant proportion of the population of a species.

TRANSCRIPTOME PROFILING is the set of all RNA molecules, including mRNA, rRNA, tRNA, and other non-coding RNA produced in one or a population of cells.

GENE ONTOLOGY (GO) is a term that encompasses areas such as cellular function, molecular function or a biological process. GO defines a biological process as "A phenomenon marked by changes that lead to a particular result, mediated by one or more gene products." Biological process terms can be quite specific, for example glycolysis or very general such as death. Not surprisingly molecular function and biological process terms are closely interrelated. "A biological process is accomplished via one or more ordered assemblies of molecular functions" (www.geneontology.org).
